Fracture Mechanics Verification

FEM-Vernetzung eines Strukturbauteils mit Rissfront – bruchmechanischer Nachweis nach FKM-Richtlinie durch ITB

Fracture mechanics verification allow analysis, e.g. of defects in components, and whether they are acceptable for this component under the loads it is subject to. The size and location of the defect in the component are either assumed based on the testing process, or the defects are identified in terms of size and location based on measurements. Questions within the framework of fracture mechanics investigations include e.g. whether the defect will result in crack initiation under static loading, or whether dynamic loading would result in crack progression or growth.

Fracture mechanics questions are generally solved by means of analytical calculation approaches. In more complex cases, we can also determine the fracture mechanics key figures utilising Finite Elements Method calculations. For the fracture mechanics analysis, we utilise the program IWM Verb, which is based on the FKM Directive “Fracture Mechanics Proof of Strength for Engineering Components”.

Our service portfolio for fracture mechanics evaluations comprises:

  • Fracture mechanics verification in compliance with FKM Directive “Fracture Mechanics Proof of Strength for Engineering Components”
  • Analysis of static loading
    • Fracture mechanics analysis based on FAD
    • Analysis of crack initiation or crack instability
  • Analysis of cyclical loading
    • Fracture mechanics fatigue limit calculations
    • Crack progression
